 A History Lesson

Back in September 1995, SMT had only officially been in business for nine months (Even though development on gauges started back in 1992). This year was the on-year AISE show in Pittsburgh. AISE was the most important event in the flat strip business, and SMT decided they had to be there to show off their new gauging products.

Working on a limited advertising budget the first year in business, Tom Sharpe and John Bartlett loaded four working gauges, and a lot of advertising material into a rented van and drove from Connecticut to Pittsburgh the day before the show.

Unfortunately, exhibition space had been sold out months before the corporation even existed on paper. As a result, no matter how hard they tried, not love or money could buy booth space on the exhibition show floor (and we did try both!). This did not discourage the two partners in the least. "Only a minor setback" john said with a tired smile.

Tom decided the best thing to do was to rent a suite at the Doubletree hotel adjoining the convention center. Maybe they could at least attract some of the people looking for hospitality suites during or after the show.

The hotel provided extra tables and accommodations to help them display the gauges they had brought with them. All four units were setup, calibrated and in perfect working order in the suite before they went to sleep that night.

The next morning before the show started, Tom and John set developed a plan to get the word out. SMT was here and going to be noticed. They went around to all of the hospitality listing boards in the lobby of the hotel, and on the convention center exhibition floor, and listed their suite as a hospitality suite. During show hours, they took turns walking the show floor talking to people and handing out business cards.

They managed to attract a little over forty visitors over the course of four days, and ultimately sold two systems as a result of their best efforts.
